Feeling 1090 steering by tiller or by wheel? 04 Jui 2024 04:42 #6979

Hello,
we are faced with the decision of buying a Feeling 1090. This boat needs to be completely refitted.
It has a tiller steering, already with tillerpilot. We want to use it for relaxed cruising, initially in the Baltic Sea.
We really like the space in the cockpit with the tiller.
Our qustion: is the Feeling 1090 generally better to sail with a tiller or with a steering wheel? Unfortunately we can not make a testrun with the boat.

Many thanks in advance for any tips and advice.

Best regards
Oliver

ps: On Thursday we will decide whether to do the refit (new windows, derusting the keel, new sails, new shrouds and stays and finding water ingress)

Feeling 1090 steering by tiller or by wheel? 04 Jui 2024 04:51 #6980

Hello Olivier,
most of the 1090 are equiped with a steering wheel. Which makes the cockpit smaller.
There are few with a tiller, with more room in the cockpit.
Both are easy to steer. For racing the owners prefer the tiller of course (more sensitivity).
For cruising, you will use the autopilot anyway, 90% of time.
What you need is an excellent autopilot, inside the boat, with an hydraulic pump (B&G, NKE, ...)
Best regards, Gerard
